The main stream of applied linguistics lies in North America and Europe. As an applied linguistics researcher living in Japan, I hope to contribute knowledge that will help those working in the main stream better understand those who live in “peripheries.”
I have always been interested in the issue of Second Language Writing, probably because I myself struggled so much with learning how to write in English as a second language. But writing in English has also given me wonderful opportunities to communicate with those I can never meet, especially over the past thirty years thanks to the remarkable development of IT and the Internet.
